"An understanding of complexity"

Both natural and human environments are very complex places – many planning and land-use decisions require a large number of discrete and independent spatial datasets (census, land ownership, soil maps, etc.). Geospatial solutions, such as geographic information systems (GIS), are the most efficient way to address issues with a variety of spatial input factors. Enviro-Geo incorporates over a decade of experience in the design and management of GIS databases for a variety of applications, ranging from agricultural to forestry to urban-oriented. We have direct and relevant experience related to all aspects of GIS development, from feasibility studies to long-term database management:

Geospatial User Needs Assessments

We can help you undertake feasibility studies and an assessment of your geospatial needs, with a consideration of both current and long-term requirements. Proper planning at this early stage can save a great deal of time and money later on – Enviro-Geo has the experience to help you design implementation strategies to maximize the benefits you reap from your GIS.

Geodatabase Design and Implementation

This very important step requires two ingredients: 1) the experience of a professional who has designed dozens of geodatabases for a variety of applications, and 2) open dialogue and communication between the GIS professional and the client. The design and structure of a GIS can make the difference between an easy-to-use tool that pays huge dividends and one that is frustrating and falls short of expectations.

Spatial Data Management

Management and fusion of discrete geospatial datasets can be a challenging task - it is important to deal with a professional experienced in manipulating both vector and raster datasets from a variety of sources. Enviro-Geo is experienced in performing data standardization and integration procedures to ensure consistent and comparable datasets, including generation of metadata.

Spatial Analysis and Synthesis

Enviro-Geo uses GIS technology as the core of its entire suite of products, including remote sensing analyses and nutrient cycle modeling. As a result, we have many years of experience in developing custom algorithms and routines to generate output using a mult itude of geospatial techniques:

  • Overlay analyses
  • Data cleaning
  • Time series
  • Network analyses
  • Buffer applications
  • Geostatistical modeling and mapping
  • Topological analyses

Development of Customized GIS Applications

Often a client’s specific needs are best met through the design and development of customized geospatial applications. These applications can either be desktop-based (extensions to the GIS software) or web-based. Enviro-Geo works closely with our clients to develop applications that are tailored specifically to the demands of the specific end-users (view a sample customized application for water quality).

Professional Map Design and Creation

By serving as the lead GIS professional for many projects and publications, Stephen Boles of Enviro-Geo has the ability to produce high-quality cartographic output in both paper and digital format. Boles has co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles, has presented results at several workshops and scientific conferences, and has contributed to reports for the California Energy Commission and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Excellent writing skills

This often-overlooked skill is critical - the production of easy-to-understand reports, text, narratives, and captions can dramatically increase the ease of use of the final product and result in less confusion and frustration amongst clients and end-users.

Training, Outreach, and Support

Enviro-Geo works closely with its clients through all phases of the GIS development – from initial planning to long-term support and guidance. We pride ourselves on the emphasis that we place on training and outreach so that our clients maximize the utility of the tools we provide. This can be achieved through our technology transfer workshops and seminars or from ongoing communication with clients after the GIS has been established to ensure it continues to meet the client’s needs over time.
